Diabetes is not just a disease — it’s a life-altering force. It’s heart failure, kidney disease, nerve damage, emotional burden, invisible pain, loss of potential and financial burden. It touches every organ system, every family, every community. And unfortunately, the number of people with diabetes continues to rise at a staggering pace.

That’s why OHSU is expanding what we do and how we do it. Our goal is to transform the Harold Schnitzer Diabetes Health Center into a national destination for diabetes care and research — and a global leader in the effort to prevent and cure diabetes and its complications. Underscoring our work is an unwavering commitment to ensuring that every person with diabetes can get the care and the support they need.

A friendship built from diabetes care

Farahnaz Joarder, M.D., has been seeing Lynn Kauffman to help her manage her type 1 diabetes care for nearly two decades. The two have a strong working relationship that has developed into a friendship over the years.

Meet Ja’Kai

When Ja’Kai was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, his parents took him to OHSU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital.  This budding social media star frequently appears on his mom’s TikTok account to share all the intricacies of his condition, from changing his insulin pump to monitoring his blood sugar. Ja’Kai was chosen to participate in the Doernbecher Freestyle program.

OHSU is positioned to innovate

OHSU stands at the forefront of transforming diabetes care through a bold vision that integrates cutting-edge science, digital innovation and a deep commitment to health equity.
