Charles A. Preuss Distinguished Alumni Award

This award was established in 1983 in honor of Charles A. Preuss, M.D., a 1929 graduate of the OHSU School of Medicine. Dr. Preuss practiced in California for 66 years and served as president of the American Academy of General Physicians.

Nominees for this award reflect the highest ideals of the OHSU School of Medicine, including:

  • Visionary leadership
  • Professional achievement
  • Community service
  • Significant contribution to a population, a medical or scientific discipline, or a field of study

Richard T. Jones Distinguished Alumni Scientist Award

Established in 2001, this award was renamed in 2006 to honor Richard T. Jones, M.D., Ph.D., a 1955 graduate of the OHSU School of Medicine. Dr. Jones joined the faculty of what is now OHSU in 1961 and was appointed chair of biochemistry in 1966, a position he held until 1993.

This award recognized alumni from the OHSU School of Medicine’s master’s or Ph.D. programs who have demonstrated:

  • Outstanding achievements in academic, community, business or industry settings
  • Research excellence
  • Service to the broader scientific community
  • Contributions to education in research methodology and practice

Esther Pohl Lovejoy Leadership Award

Established in 2008, this award honors Esther Pohl Lovejoy, M.D., an 1894 graduate of the OHSU School of Medicine. Dr. Lovejoy played a significant role in public health reform and suffrage in early 20th-century Portland. She went on to become a pioneer in international medical relief work.

This award honors for outstanding leadership advancing health systems, policy and outcomes. Efforts may include:

  • National and/or global contributions and service to the medical profession
  • Systemic changes resulting in improved health outcomes
  • Development of programs or policies that promise lasting impacts on human health

Walter C. Reynolds M.D. Community Service Award

Established in 2022, this award honors the life and legacy of Walter C. Reynolds, M.D ’49. Dr. Reynolds was a physician, community leader, and the first African American graduate of what is now the OHSU School of Medicine.

This award honors alumni whose service has substantially benefitted marginalized communities. Efforts may include:

  • Reducing bias
  • Advancing diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging
  • Combatting structural racism
  • Strengthening cultural competencies, particularly in healthcare

Early Career Achievement Award

Established in 2013, recognizes alumni for significant contributions to academia, scientific research or health and social welfare. This award honors up to three recipients each year

  • one for achievement in basic science,
  • one for achievement in clinical sciences and
  • one for achievement by a graduate of the OHSU Physician Assistant program.

Eligible achievements must have occurred within fifteen years of the nominee’s M.D. graduation (regardless of granting institution), or within 15 years of the nominee’s graduation from OHSU’s certificate, bachelor’s, master’s or Ph.D. programs.

New in 2026, the Collective Impact Award celebrates alumni leadership in advancing solutions to pressing clinical, community or health science challenges.

This award recognizes a standout project or program that demonstrates:

  • Alumni leadership in building collaborative, cross-disciplinary solutions
  • Innovation, community focus and scalability
  • Measurable improvement to human health and well-being
  • A significant advance in the understanding of systemic factors that impact human health and well-being

The project lead(s) or principal investigator(s) must be OHSU School of Medicine alumni.
